‘FLexercise‘ is a UK-wide organisation delivering “community-based exercise classes for people of all ages, shapes and sizes”. Classes are specifically aimed at the over 50s and combine a mixture of movement, dance, having fun – and making new friends. Classes are non-competitive and each client is encouraged to work to their own ability.
The FLexercise system is low-impact and blends the principles of correct body alignment for improved posture, joint mobilisation, muscle strengthening and lengthening, balance and coordinated movement. Classes are delivered to music, but there is no pre-prescribed choreography and this allows instructors to adapt exercises and movement for each participant, whilst enabling them to enjoy the benefits of a group exercise environment.
The FLexercise system was designed in the 1930’s by Mary Bagot Stack, who was a pioneer in realising that women needed to exercise too (at a time when “getting fit” was mainly aimed at men). She set up the first group classes for women in the UK, devising the 'Bagot Stack' system, which remains the foundation for new teachers that train to be FLexercise teachers. She was influenced by the principles of Pilates (which evolved in the 1920’s) and Yoga.
The FLexercise body alignment work is similar to that of the Pilates core stability. Class participants are always providing feedback on how much better they feel after attending classes. “Aches and pains are reduced, balance improves, mental health issues are less acute,” says Lidia, and “they become more body aware while having fun”.
